dual booting XP and Linux

There seems to me to be a very strong argument for saving the mbr
with something like
        dd if=/dev/hda of=mbr-<today> bs=512 count=1
so you can restore it if needs be with
        dd of=/dev/hda if=mbr-<today> bs=512 count=1

I would suggest that any program that over-writes the mbr
should do something like this.
