if you are in rescue mode...the path would
be /mnt/sysimage/var/log/messages unless you 'chroot /mnt/sysimage' in
which case, it would be where it's supposed to be. chroot command
changes the root point

those things aren't typical for a user environment so a user would not
generally know or have the path to access.

If you were to 'su -' (change to root user using the su command and
adding the "-" to obtain root's environment/shell, the program ifconfig
would be accessible as root has both /sbin and /usr/sbin in it's path

samba is indeed weapon of choice - for information on samba, see the 'By
Example' from the official samba documentation as any paraphrasing would
likely do a disservice...
