I downloaded the iso from the fedoraproject.org website, and burned the DVD
on a Windows XP laptop.
I just downloaded fsum from slavasoft, which allows me to check the sha1sum
via Windows XP, and ran a test on the DVD iso, and the SHA1 sums matched, so
it looks like I'm working off a good DVD image.

The purpose of the sha1sum is not entirely to assure you have a good
download. It's also to assure that you have a factory iso and not one
that joe cracker has substituted for you.
That's why you should test with sha1sum after download *in addition* to
testing during the install process.
