Add the following line to your inittab.
s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L <serial port> <speed> <terminal
emulation)
E.g. s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L ttyS0 57600 vt100

When you're done, just issue "init q" as root. It'll start the serial
port.
