Considering that the manual discusses mapping from "drive" to "drive",
and only provides examples like yours, I'd say there's an error in
trying to apply it to partitions.

If one were to be pedantically logical about it, using the first
example, mapping partitions would *only* map those partitions.  The
remaining ones would be used as they really are (i.e. hd0,0 would seen
as hd1,0, but hd0,1 would still be hd0,1).
