I don't know if you read any of the previous discussion... I'm not 
suggesting that we replace NFS with SMB wholesale.  The only point I'm 
trying to make is that it's silly to try to support NFS in desktop file 
managers.  NFS servers don't announce themselves like SMB servers do, 
which is a significant disadvantage, and accessing NFS directly through 
a desktop file manager (rather than mounting the share, as root) 
necessitates a complete lack of security on the NFS share.

NFS is a fine protocol for trusted networks, but it's not designed to be 
accessed by users, through desktop file managers.
