Have you tried adding a noprobe option to the kernel command line? I
had no luck enabling DMA on the dvd drive in my laptop until I did
this. In /etc/grub.conf, I added hdc=noprobe to the kernel line. I
forget some of the details at the moment, but if you have SATA disk
drives that are seen as /dev/sd{a,b}, but the dvd is /dev/hdc (or
hdd), then adding a noprobe may help you too.
