Didn't Intel call the "586" processor family "Pentium" because they
couldn't trademark numbers?

Probably.

I think the "generic" IDE driver is built into the kernel rather than
being a module so that shouldn't be a problem. It might be useful to see
what's in the current initrd for that machine though
(the /etc/modules.conf file should reveal what's needed).
