    Thanks for the pointer Terry.  The foomatic kit seems to have worked 
... a little.  I've posted a message on their forums but I'll re-post it 
here as well in case anyone else has any suggestions:

Okay, so I grabbed the foomatic kit for this printer and got it working 
... kinda.  I can print some things but it's erratic at best.  I'm able 
to print out of OpenOffice Writer with some success, but usually it just 
sits there and
does nothing.  When I look at the job queue though CUPS, it says the 
jobs's there, but nothing's happening - in fact I let it just sit there 
over night and nothing happened.  Is there anything I can do to diagnose 
this problem?  At this point I can't print anything anymore and killing 
the tasks don't seem to do anything - I simply can't print anymore and 
would have to completely restart the machine to be able to print again.  
And even that is sketchy at best, it might or might not work after a 
reboot.  When a print job gets "stuck", this is what I see in my process 
list:
