Hi;
 I had the same problem.
I removed "rhgb, quiet" from grub.conf for that kernel.
It now works.
My video card is a radeon 9200se.

My xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Videocard0"
        Driver      "radeon"
        VendorName  "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName   "ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE]
(Secondary)"
EndSection

Part of my grub.conf:
title Fedora Core (2.6.16-1.2107_FC5)
        root (hd1,0)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.16-1.2107_FC5 ro root=/dev/hdb7
        initrd /initrd-2.6.16-1.2107_FC5.img
