And in some cases that may fail, you can add //TRANSLIT to have iconv
try to transliterate any characters from utf to latin (things like
curly quotes come to mind).
The syntax would be:
iconv -f utf-8 -t ISO-8859-1//TRANSLIT infile > outfile
