gdm error aften login

I set the FC5 default runlevel to 5. The gnome-session seems started ok. I
login using gnome. After login, the gnome panel does not appear,  the
xterminal is frozen. I have to start a text console (ctrl+alt+f1). login as
normal user,
do this steps to restart the gnome session:

su -c "/sbin/init 3"

su -c "/sbin/init 5"
what is problem? how to fix or where to look for hints.
