kernel from 1 box to another

It will work, but you have to build a new initrd file. Just (as root) do 
'/sbin/mkinitrd /boot/initrd-(kernel version).img (kernel version)'. 
That is because the initrd holds the modules needed to start up, and is 
different for each system.
