too many open files. How to increase the limit

I've been reading this thread wondering what the problem was (I use
Evolution on FC5, I'm using it right now) and hadn't noticed any
problems.  I'd also wondered whether the proposed solution was to give
a minor increase in the number of files that could be opened, or a huge
one.
