You can always try this...

at login screen - press <Control><Alt><F2>
to get a text mode virtual console
log in as root
run 'init 3' # to get into runlevel 3
run 'system-config-display --reconfig' to get the configuration tool
see if 1024x768 is offered there, choose it if it is and then click OK
run 'init 5' to get back to runlevel 5

I do recall that in KDE, I was able to change the display resolution
from the GUI directly but I am not in front of an FC-6 setup at the
moment and you are probably in GNOME anyway.

By the way, you don't need to reboot to check out 'changed' settings in
X. You can simply press <Control><Alt><Shift><Backspace> to kill X -
which will then reload and ask you to login again but make sure you save
any documents first.
