any need for any MTD functionality on a desktop system?

Yes, I was thinking about JFFS2 filesystem with USB. I guess you could
use MTD on a NOR flash BIOS for example but AFAIK nobody does.

There is likely a metric ton of stuff you can throw out of the configure
depending on what you actually need from the kernel.
