Microphone does not work in FC6

I think I know what the problem is. In alsamixer, when I select "capture",
the microphone volume cannot be adjusted - as if it was not a possible
capture source. I looked at /etc/alsa/alsa.conf anf /etc/asound.state but it's all Greek to me...
