FC6 Power off not working any more

This is frustrating. I have been complaining about this behavior on one of my machines since the 
week FC6 arrived. No one seemed to be able to explain this and I stopped complaining
when no one else seemed to report this behavior. Maybe not enough FC6 had been installed.
In my case it is an old machine (2000). Could that be a precipitating factor?
I have updated the BIOS and I have no acpi=off in the kernel line.
