I have a working X with the 83865G video but was trying to help someone 
with a broken X.

The excerpt that seemed to help him out was to manually select the 
monitor using system-config-display --reconfig

I hope this gives you some  idea as to where to start searching.

Can anyone remember when the times were not hard, and money not scarce?
