I take it you had a grep piped in there between dmesg and wc?
Otherwise you're simply counting the lines in dmesg's output.  And the
drive you are having problems with is a SCSI drive, or USB/Firewire
connected drive?  If not then this error would not relate to that
drive.

As for the cause, nice to know that Linux will do that on a failing drive.
