Or missing codecs?  ATrpms has a package for the codecs (w32codec).

It's bash that will complain if you pass the url on the command line
without quoting or otherwise escaping the parens.  This works for me:

wget "http://videoarch1.s-inf.de/FP.2005-SS-Giesl.(COt).HD_Videoaufzeichnung/2005-SS-FP.V01.2005-04-12.HDV_low.avi"
