FC5 update to kernel 2187 hangs at bootime

having the  2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 kernel implies a newly installed FC5 with
no updates.

Did you do a "yum update yum" followed by a "yum update" to make sure
everything was properly updated?   Or did you just do a "yum update
kernel"?

If the latter then it is not surprising that it is hanging.  Not
everything got updated and a lot of stuff may be interfering. 
If the former and it is still hanging it may not have completed the
update properly.

What I have done to fix either one is boot back to the original kernel
in run level 3, then repeat the yum update to finish it as cleanly as
possible before booting into the newer kernel.

Although my system is not necessarily the same hardware wise as others
it seems to work for me.

One other thing that can be a real problem is failing to update the
video driver and X before booting into the new kernel.  That can
definitely cause an apparent hang.
