problem with new fglrx driver

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem!

After running pup to update my FC5 installation, the following updates were
installed:

kernel-2.6.18-1.2200.fc5 (i686)
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8.29.6-1.lvn5
kmod-fglrx-8.29.6-1.2.6.18_1.2200.fc5 (i686)

After rebooting, when X was started, my laptop's screen went completely white
(no messages, no nothing) and the system hung.

Just like you, I tried rebooting into the previous kernel (2.6.17-1.2187) and
had the same problem.

I had to boot into single user mode and disable the ATI driver
(ati-fglrx-config-display disable) in order to get things working again.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the fglrx packages made no difference.  No idea
what the problem is.  I'm just going to run unaccelerated until someone figures
out a fix.
