It works better if you go back and slowly re-read the
documentation. Apparently qemu builds its own network emulator and
assigns addresses. So don't reassign addresses with ifconfig. Also,
ping apparently doesn't work outside the emulated network.

To use my local DNS servers, I prepared a special resolve.conf to get
via wget. To avoid having dhcp over-write that, I'll turn off the dhcp
client after boot. Or see if I can get it to ignore the contents of
resolv.conf.
