Not that I could see, I did check the man file about whether it "forced"
anything before doing so.

Unknown, though I've not found RPM, by itself, to manage anything else
related to what you were trying to do.  For instance, if you tried to
install something that required other packages, it'd "error out" and
you'd be forced to include those other packages on the command line.
Before yum, it could be quite a pain to install some things.

The only mentions of oldpackage in the man files are the following two
options in the list of "install and upgrade" options, and it being
listed in the summary of the "install" set of options:

       --force
              Same as using --replacepkgs, --replacefiles, and --oldpackage.

       --oldpackage
              Allow an upgrade to replace a newer package with an older one.
