No, it doesn't run on the cut down machine it doesn't have Xserver 
installed, and is running text mode.

Correct. I made a typo when entering this query, sorry to confuse.

Machine is cut down no ssh yet!

Error: can't open display: 192.168.32.201:0

{xserver is on 192.168.32.201, the cut down pachine is 192.168.32.99
  If that works, we can then work on what is going wrong

OK, trying with ssh:
$ ssh -Y 192.168.32.99

I guess I don't have even the absolute minimum packages for an Xclient 
to run.
