On this system I see a difference in the time yum takes to setup the
updates, firefox seems to fetch pages slower, these are two items I
experience frequently.

I agree with the *some* stage part, sooner or later it will work.  I
think that it could be the latency of waiting for the 6 stuff to time
out, I just do not know.
