Security Updates -- Are they necessary in Linux for user?

I always review it.
If there is a *big* update - I look at what it is for, and if it is
something I don't use, it gets the axe and is removed. Unless it is a
dependency.

qt is on my system because for some reason completely unknown to me, my
print driver wants it. My printer (HP LaserJet 4) has the Postscript
Level II simm, so I suspect that I could use just a generic postscript
driver. But it is weird that the driver cups chose for my printer has qt
for a dependency.
