Changing resolution on laptop

I was in fact using x, not *, but I did have the numbers backwards.
Now that I transposed them it displays in my choice of 1400x1050 or
1024x768. The refresh rate is very low on the CRT, however, maybe
around 60hz or evern less. The picture is also very thin and tall.
I've googled xorg.conf files, and I've found these options:
   HorizSync       31.5-48.5
   VertRefresh     55-90
   Modeline  "1152x864"   65.00 1152 1168 1384 1480 864 865 875 985 interlace
   Modeline  "1024x768"   65.00 1024 1032 1176 1344 768 771 777 806

I'd like to get the refresh rate up to at least 75 hz and I need to
fatten the screen a bit and make it shorter (larger on the X axis,
lesser on the Y axis). Can I do it with those options? I can ask on
the xorg list if that would be a better place- I just signed up there.
