ftp slow w/ proftpd# Samba fast

Hi,
     I'm using proftpd as server on my fedora box and it's damn slow. Users
take forever to download/upload things on the server. But when I share my
folder as a Samba share, it's almost instantaneous downloads/uploads for
users. Any clues to make my FTP blazing fast? Could SELINUX be one of the
problems?
