To find out if the disk is labelled and what:
#e2label /dev/hda1
To blank it out:
#e2label /dev/hda1 "" (that's empty quotes.)
Also check that "/boot/grub/device.map" is correct.
The hd entries start from 0 for hda, a cdrom is not an hd, so is
skipped.
