amarok problem with xine

I've installed amarok under Fedora 6,
as well as the kdemultimedia-extras-nonfree rpm from livna ,
but when I try to play an mp3 I get the messages
"xine was unable to initialize any audio drivers"
and "Some media could not be loaded (not playable)".

I can play the track under Windows XP.

On googling, it seems that many people have met this problem;
but I didn't see any suggested solution.

Any advice gratefully received.
