Computers generally pull between 60 and 300 watts of power for the computer
itself, not including monitors and the like.  Older computers are in many cases
less efficient.

If we assume that the computer you propose to use for a router consumes 200
watts (which is probably in the ballpark) then at twelve cents per KW/h it will
cost you about 58 cents per day for the power to operate it.  Or $17.98 per
month.  Assuming 24/7 usage, which is what you're looking at if you're going to
use it for a router.

A Dlink router consumes 4.5 watts, which comes to about 40 cents per
month for power at the same twelve cents per KW/h.

In three months, you've paid for the router with what you didn't spend on the
power bill, and after that you're keeping $17.50 in your pocket every month.
$210 in your hand every year isn't bad....

Now... are you sure you can't afford a router?
