Problem with screen resolution in F8

I had a similar problem with a totally different machine, but solved it 
by assuming the display wasn't being recognized. So I used the hardware 
admin to set the display to generic 1280x1024 LCD and then selected the 
resolution from the preferences menu.

So easy I didn't even take notes, which is why I can't give you a step 
by step. If I ignore the part where I swore at it, the whole thing took 
< 2 min and involved logging out once to restart the display.
