Check the basic volume control under
system->preferences->personal->volume control. 
Check the mic.  Some have a switch on the stem or on the cord.  Make
sure it is turned on... maybe too obvious, but I have occasionally had
too many whacks with the dumb stick, so I tend to see my liabilities in
others ;-)

Make sure the mike is plugged in all the way.  Some times those mini
jacks will hit a snag and not go all the way in right.

These hints are courtesy of the guy who can find every possible way to
make it not work ;-)
