it's placing two files in the root directory *of the distinct /boot
partition*, which is, as i hope you can appreciate, a fairly important
qualifier -- a qualifier that karl never made in his original post.

when someone says something is "in the root or / directory," that has
a fairly precise and unambiguous meaning to most linux people, and why
you're choosing to mangle that meaning is quite baffling.
