I just want to be clear. Instead of choosing WPA or WPA2 from nm-applet
you worked on configuring wpa_supplicant.conf so it would work.
Since my laptop connects to WEP, WEP-LEAP, WPA-PEAP by just choosing the
AP essid and without doing anything to wpa_supplicant.conf what am I
doing that makes my experience different than yours?

Are you using the nm-applet options at all?
