Start X: Gnome/KDE?

The X server has to be running before you can use 
startkde

You can put a .xinitrc file in your user directory and have it cause the X server to open with just a xterm.  Then you can use either 

startkde 

or

gnome-sessions 

to start the graphical display of your choice.
