True true... but the init string that kppp throws at the modem is so
generic as to be almost painful. While you have Windows up, do a search
of init strings for your modem.

I have a US Robotic 56k and I use:
1st init string:
ATZ
2nd init string:
AT&D2&C1X4V1Q0S7=70&B1&H1&R2s32=98

That last bit, the s32=98 (yes, lowercase "s") slows her down to 28.8 as
that is the only reliable connect I can make, out here in the country,
with out getting the same error you get.

Hopefully you have the switches tossed correctly, just use the settings
in the manual that are noted to be the default settings.

Yeah, I played Merry Hell getting mine to work as well. You do have your
ISP telephone number, username and passwd set? The pre-init setting I
have is 4, so you have some seconds before it expects to hear a dialtone
and then dial. If you're trying to use peoplepc, I'd give up on it. I
could not get it to work at all. kppp also has a script mode that lets
you issue the commands yourself, by hand.

ATZ
OK
AT&D2&C1X4V1Q0S7=70&B1&H1&R2s32=98~
OK
ATM1L1~
OK
ATDT*70,584-0069~

I get my connect here, but the stinking window closes at this point so I
couldn't cut and paste the last bit where it says carrier detected or
somesuch. Hope this helps, "Works For Me"(tm) and YMMV. Ric
