I used to teach C around the country, and wrote notes because virtually 
all of the books were reference rather than self-teaching. However, I 
really like the Sams "Teach yourself XXX in 24 hours" books, and there's 
a C book in that series which might be what you need.

You can get one used from alibris.com for two bucks, that's where I 
looked to be sure there was such a beast and not just C++ or C#. Or buy 
it new, of course.
