USB drive light does not turn off after "safely removing"

As far as I know, Linux does not shut down the power to the USB 
socket when you "safely remove" a drive. It is something that could 
be added, though it will not be simple. (Does the drive have more 
then one partition, is it a multi-card card reader, etc.)
