Having fought the good fight once too often with the update system
(can't log in as root but must have root password? Muddy thinking), I
now run the updates from command line yum after examining the
information from the tool. Twice I have had issues when the tool got
confused due to a server hang, fail or timeout in mid-update. The tool
can't finish the update and leaves something messed up.

If you use the tool it usually works, although it tends to be slow on
modest systems. I just am as comfortable with the command line, and I've
found it slightly more reliable.
