In my case the CPU goes to 100%, so the machine is sluggish but not 100%
unresponsive. If I exit evolution everything returns to normal. It
will happen every time I compose an email, but will also happen at
seemingly random intervals otherwise.

> Did you get this backwards? You mean you had the problem with F8 but not with F9?
No, I've only seen it in F9. I think it's related somehow to gnome
automatically passing the passphrase in F9, whereas that hasn't worked
for me in F8.
