The graphical login inhibits root boot.  When the grub screen comes up on
startup, hit return to bring up the menu.  Edit the vmlinuz line to enter
the number 3.  Boot to level three text screen.  The root login can be done
in this mode.  The command
startx
will get you to the graphical desktop.
