I am talking about the widget that has the name "Folder View" (sorry, I rarely
use capitals for names of such things). It is that "window" you see containing
the icons on the desktop.

How about

  http://userbase.kde.org/Tutorials/KDE3toKDE4

? It is less than 5 pages. ;-) There are also other topics on

  http://userbase.kde.org/Tutorials

you might wish to check out.

I have Compiz-fusion/Emerald running smoothly over KDE4, so it is possible to
do, even not too complicated. If you have problems setting it up, open a
thread about it.

However, KDE4 has its own set of 3D desktop effects with the aim of cloning
Compiz features (don't ask why, I already did, search the list archives). Take
a look at

  http://www.undefinedfire.com/kde/41-42-kwin

I suggest you try that first, and if you are satisfied, stick with it. I use
C-F/E only because KDE4 still lacks some effects I prefer to have. Compiz is
much more mature in this respect than KDE4, which is reasonable since it has
been developed over a longer time frame. But KDE4 is getting better and
better, so it might work for your taste out of the box.

I don't understand this. What does "reaganian" mean? Couldn't find it in any
dictionary, nor via google. :-(

HTH, :-)
