Why can't I launch qgis??

Same way you did....  "yum install qgis" and dependencies were resolved....

FWI, I have probably found why qgis works for me and not for you....  I
run KDE.   If I run qgis under Gnome it will seg fault.

So, as a work around, you can always switch to KDE.  :-)
