If you are doing upgrades that is necessary in at least some cases unless
you want a lot of pain. (I actually went from F9 to F11 to F12 using
yum and rpm, but it was not very clean.)

A fresh install of F11 (or even F12) after trying out a livecd possibly
would have been a better approach.
