Media Streaming

I have a Windows Machine with Media centre installed, that streams music and
videos on my network to my Xbox and other PC. Is there a upnp or media
client I can use in linux to stream music when using my laptop. I have seen
a few sites mention VLC can be used as a client, but I'm not sure if it
works or not.
