Some kernels don't boot from USB disk

It looks as if the newer kernel is recognizing (or perhaps mistakenly
recognizing) the actual chip driving the unit, but the driver it has for
that chip doesn't work, while the generic usb-storage driver does work
with it. You may have to pass a parameter to the boot loader somehow.
