The write requirement arises because TBird wants to update state
information and indices.

If you're feeling adventurous, you could possibly do this using union
mounts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnionFS). However AFAIK this is
still not supported in the stable kernel tree.

Alternatively, there might be a way to play tricks with symbolic links
in order to achieve the same effect. Left as an exercise for the
reader :-)
